Better Prompts for AI Assistants: A Plain-English Guide
Five simple habits that help you get clearer, more useful answers from AI chat assistants for everyday tasks.
By the GNOUP team · · 2 min read
AI chat assistants can help with everyday tasks like drafting an email, planning a trip or explaining a tricky topic. The quality of what you get back often depends on how you ask. These five habits make a noticeable difference.
1. Say who it's for
"Explain compound interest" gets a generic answer. "Explain compound interest to a 12-year-old in three short paragraphs" gets a focused one.
2. Give the context
Share the details that matter: your goal, constraints and anything you've already tried. For example: "I have 30 minutes and only eggs, spinach and rice. Suggest two dinner ideas."
3. Ask for a format
Request a bulleted list, a table, a short email or a step-by-step plan. A clear format makes answers easier to scan and reuse.
4. Iterate instead of starting over
If the first answer isn't right, reply with what to change: "Make it shorter and friendlier," or "Swap step 3 for something cheaper."
5. Double-check what matters
AI assistants can sound confident and still be wrong. Verify facts, numbers, health, legal or money information with a trusted source before acting on it, and avoid pasting private or sensitive personal data.
